Washington HC Chris Petersen stepping down, Jimmy Lake named new coach

Petersen had told Alexander it would be really good for him to visit and see how Lake teaches.

After a historically fantastic run at Boise State - going 92-12 with five conference championships and four top ten finishes in his eight years, he took over a Washington program that lost Steve Sarkisian to USC, remodeled and reworked it a bit, and then ... boom.

Chris Petersen has stepped down as the head coach at the University of Washington. Huskies athletic director Jennifer Cohen named defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake as the team's new coach in a news release.

There will be no coaching search.

The all-important 2021 class is looming, and Lake clearly knows how to get the job done on the recruiting trail, so it'll be a pretty big test for him right off the bat, but he's definitely up to the task.

The surprise is the timing. Petersen will coach through the Huskies' bowl game before transitioning "into a leadership advisory role for Husky Athletics", according to the media release.

Alexander played for Petersen at Boise State, where he was a four-time first-team All-WAC defensive back.

Petersen led the Huskies to three consecutive seasons with double-digit wins from 2016-18 and a pair of Pac-12 championships in 2016 and '18.

Ruiz says pressure all on Joshua ahead of Saudi rematch
Puerto Rican Luis Pabon has been named as the referee for Anthony Joshua 's world heavyweight title rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. Whyte said Sky sports: "It's heavyweight boxing , what can I say?" "I know how good I am".

Petersen was also unbeaten against rival Washington State.

"It has been a privilege and knowledgeable dream fulfilled to be a part of this world-class establishment", Petersen mentioned. "I will forever be grateful, honored and humbled to have had the opportunity to coach our fine young men on Montlake for these past six seasons". It's why - in a time when some schools offer 300 to 400 players a chance to take one of 25 football scholarships - the Huskies were incredibly selective in the players they sought.

Petersen was finally persuaded to leave Boise State in 2013 after growing the Broncos into a national powerhouse.

He leaves Washington after arguably his most disappointing season.

Within three seasons, Petersen had Washington playing Alabama in the Peach Bowl for the right to play for the national title. This was his second-worst season at the school, as he went 7-6 during the 2015 season. Bob Stoops, then 56, left Oklahoma after the 2016 season, and Urban Meyer, then 54, left Ohio State after the 2018 season. "It has been such a privilege to watch how he has been so committed to the development of our young men, not just on the field, but more importantly off. I can't thank him sufficient for his service and management, and I look ahead to having him keep on workers in a management advisory position, so he can proceed to affect people throughout our division and the complete campus".

A formal announcement to promote Lake is expected to take place Tuesday morning.

But Lake immediately went into coaching, serving as a graduate assistant for EWU before coaching defensive backs (DBs) in Cheney from 2000-03. He was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2016 and has served as the Huskies' lone defensive coordinator in the last two seasons.

"I could not be more excited about taking over as head football coach at the University of Washington", said Lake in a statement.
