Google Co-Founders Step Down, Sundar Pichai to Lead Alphabet

The pair, however, are not out of the door entirely: They'll remain on the search and advertising giant's board of directors and own a substantial chunk of the company's shares as well as possess voting control over the company.

Page and Brin, both 46, are leaving their respective roles as CEO and president of Alphabet effective immediately, the company announced on Tuesday.

The 2015 reorganisation appeared aimed at installing the startup mentality for new ventures, described by Google as "moonshots".

Page and Brin, who is now Alphabet president, "will continue their involvement as co-founders, shareholders and members of Alphabet's board of directors", the company said. In addition, we plan to continue talking with Sundar regularly, especially on topics we're passionate about!

Alphabet stock was up less than one percent in after-hours trading on Tuesday to US$1302.38. The stock closed at US$1,294.74 in NY, leaving it up about 24% so far this year. "And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President", they wrote in a letter. What started as a way to catalog the growing internet has now become one of the most powerful companies in the world.

Alphabet has been positioning Pichai as the de facto leader for quite some time. "I'm grateful that they will continue their involvement on the Board".

"Keep in mind, they are not losing their title as billionaires, but they are changing their roles", Bajarin said.

The company is not filling Mr Brin's position of president. Soon after, Google's founders moved to Alphabet after handing over Google to Pichai. He has also testified in Congress and handled most of the other controversies the company has faced recently, such as employee protests over military work and executive misconduct.

Palacios agregó que el proyecto ingresará esta semana al Congreso para que sea despachado con celeridad y de esa manera el beneficio sea entregado en diciembre.

And structurally, the company evolved into Alphabet in 2015.

At this time it is not clear if Sundar will collect a salary for both roles, though as CEO of Alphabet, he may feel the CEO of Google has earned a little extra.

"Google is not a conventional company".

Page grew up in MI, where his late father, Carl, was a computer scientist and pioneer in artificial intelligence, and his mother taught computer programming.

Pichai joined Google in 2006 as a search-bar engineer.

While publicly stepping back, the co-founders still control more than 51 per cent of shares.

Meanwhile, Page's oversight job has largely fallen to Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat for the startup businesses and Alphabet Chief Legal Officer David Drummond for the company's two big investment funds.
