Gazprom starts Power of Siberia deliveries to China

The mammoth Power of Siberia pipeline connecting the world's top gas exporter and its largest energy importer crowns years of tough negotiations and work in hard conditions.

The $400 billion deal signed with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in 2014 has become the biggest contract for the Russian energy giant Gazprom. China passed Japan as the world's largest importer of natural gas previous year, when it imported 125.35 billion cubic meters of the 276.6 billion it used, according (link in Chinese) to CNPC.

Xi called on both countries to redouble their efforts to initiate more key projects like the east-route natural gas pipeline, to boost both countries' development and better benefit both peoples. "By positioning itself between the European markets to the west, and the rapidly growing gas hungry Chinese markets to the east, Russian Federation is not only creating new income streams, but hedging its bets and bolstering its position strategically".

The pipeline will deliver natural gas from the Chayandinskoye field in Yakutia and the Kovyktinskoye field in the Irkutsk Region, passing through the Urkutsk Regino, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Amur region.

The pipeline will diversify Russia's gas market while providing China with an alternative steady gas supplier, said Alexei Belogorey, deputy executive director on energy studies at Russia's Institute for Energy and Finance Foundation. The pipeline crosses wetlands, mountainous terrain and seismically active territories, along with areas with permafrost and rocky soils.

"That step brings the Russian-Chinese strategic partnership in the energy sector to a whole new level", Putin said in a statement to the Russian news agency, TASS.

The natural gas supply from Russian Federation is expected to change that, starting with the city of Heihe, which has already seen more than 30,000 people switching from coal to natural gas, according to Xinhua.

The pipeline serves as a model of.mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries, Xi said.

The new pipeline extends from Heilongjiang, on the Russian border, to Jilin and Liaoning, China's top grain hub.

China will be the main engine for an increase in global gas demand up to 2024, accounting for about 40 percent, according to the International Energy Agency.

For Russia, on the other hand, the pipeline project signals the country's pro-China sentiment. Initially, the pipeline was expected to be launched on December 20, but the work was completed faster.

The project is significant for, as they are facing sanctions from the U.S., CNBC said.

Supplies will come from the Chayandiskoye field, with gas reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters (Tcm) and production capacity of 25 Bcm/y by 2024.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in November that gas deliveries via the Nord Stream 2 may be launched by as soon as the end of the year.
