Messi wins Ballon d'Or

Images appearing to "leak" the results of voting for Ballon d'Or 2019 have emerged on Twitter, showing Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the clear victor.

"It will be tough but I still have some years ahead of me. As my wife used to say, you should never stop dreaming but always work to improve and continue to enjoy yourself".

Five-time Ballon d'Or victor and longtime Messi rival Cristiano Ronaldo came third, deciding to snub the ceremony after perhaps being tipped off that he would miss out on the top prize.

"I can't believe I'm the one winning in this field, it's been an incredible year", Rapinoe said in a recorded video message during the ceremony at the lavish Theatre du Chatelet. After missing the opening two months of this season through injury, Messi has continued where he left off last season and has scored eight goals in eight Barcelona appearances.

The 32-year-old top-scored in La Liga last season with 36 goals as Barcelona won the title. Messi was again at the forefront as he bagged a 52-goal haul during the calendar year, as well as 26 assists, in 61 games for club and country. The Argentina ace beat competition from UEFA Champions League victor Virgil van Dijk and UEFA Nations League victor Cristiano Ronaldo to bag his sixth award. "I am very proud", Van Dijk said. "There are a couple of players like him (Messi) who are fantastic".

Messi was forced to watch his great rival Ronaldo scoop the top individual prize in football in 2013 and 2014 - finishing second both times - but bounced back to claim the award in 2015, meaning a fourth Ballon d'Or in total.

American Megan Rapinoe is the favourite for the women's prize due to her exploits in the United States' World Cup triumph. Atletico has played well but lacked composure in front of goal.

"I'm so sad I can't make it tonight". "I'll do my best to get there next year".

As the football season reaches the halfway stage, it's time for us to switch our attention to the Ballon d'Or, the 64th edition of which takes place in Paris on Monday. Lucy Bronze of England was second, and Alex Morgan third.
