Gunmen Kill 14 in Burkina Faso Church - Burkina Faso

Jihadists attacked a Protestant church in Burkina Faso on Sunday, leaving 14 worshippers killed as threats of violence escallate across the Francophone country.

"Unidentified armed men" carried out the attack during a Sunday service at a Protestant church in the town of Hantoukoura near the border with Niger, the government statement said.

President Roch Marc Christian Kabore condemned "the barbaric attack" and revealed that several people also were wounded in a tweet.

Soldiers in the region were hunting down the assailants, who fled on scooters, the second source said.

But attackers - some linked to al-Qaeda, others to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) group - began infiltrating the north, before moving east and towards the southern and western borders.

Christians and others had lived peacefully in the Muslim majority country until a series of attacks blamed on jihadists spilled over from neighboring Mali previous year, leaving hundreds dead.

Hundreds of people have been killed in such attacks mostly executed by jihadist groups.

The attack came less than two months after 37 people were killed in an attack on a mining company, with additional 60 people believed wounded.
