Guardiola confirms Sergio Aguero will miss the Manchester derby

The Brazilian has been playing as a centre-back in recent months.

The pair - who are now the club's only fit senior specialist central defenders - have not started together since a calamitous loss to Norwich in September.

City manager Pep Guardiola yesterday admitted that Turf Moor would be "a hard place to go", warning his flagging side, who are 11 points behind leaders Liverpool who are on 40, to expect an aerial bombardment.

Yet Guardiola has no intention of moving the 34-year-old back into his preferred role.

The exchange began when a reporter asked why he hasn't been playing Stones and Otamendi together, to which he responded: "Because I like Dino [Fernandinho] in that position".

"I prefer Gundogan and Rodri in [the defensive midfield] position". "That is why he plays".

After failing to keep a clean sheet in seven games in all competitions, however, Guardiola accepts his team needed to tighten up at the back. We played well with the ball, we were solid, we conceded few counter-attacks, but football is how many goals you score and how you don't concede.

But the Spaniard, who is already missing Sergio Aguero, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane through injuries, will also be without Ilkay Gundogan after the German midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign at Newcastle.

The Argentine striker will miss Tuesday's clash and also Saturday's visit of neighbours Manchester United, Guardiola confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

"We will miss his quality but we have other players to replace him", he said.

City suffered another blow to their hopes of winning a third successive title as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Newcastle last Saturday.

"We knew it when we played them in the last game of the last season and they continue doing really well".

Yet Guardiola is determined to fight on and recognises the importance of claiming victory against a tough Burnley side. That is the fact. "Always we try to prepare to create more and concede less".

"We can't think too much about the people in front".

"I'm not thinking about how many games we have to win", he said.

PEP It's hard for all the teams (who visit Burnley). We need to move forward and focus on our next games.
