Iran says oil field found with 53 billion barrels of crude oil

Iran has discovered an oilfield containing 53 billion barrels in the southwest of the country, according to President Hassan Rouhani.

Mentioning the need for new technologies for developing the country's oil fields and for increasing their recovery factor, Rouhani said "Only one percent increase in the recovery from this oil field adds 32 billion dollars to the country's oil revenues and we need world-class technologies to develop the oil industry".

Iran has been struggling to sell oil overseas because of tough U.S. sanctions.

The discovery of a new oilfield would boost Iran's proven crude oil reserves by a third.

The US began to ratchet up pressure on Iran in 2018 after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). "The oil layer has a depth of 80m (262ft)", he said during a speech in the central city of Yazd.

In comments in April, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the US' attempts to block the export of Iranian oil will get nowhere as Tehran will be exporting any amount of crude it needs and wants.

Its existing proven reserves are of some 150 billion barrels, Mr Rouhani said.

Iran is considered a global energy superpower; the country reportedly possesses 10% of the world's oil reserves.

Under the accord, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in global inspectors in return for sanctions relief.
