Marquis Jefferson, 58, suffered a fatal heart attack his spokesperson told NBC 5 DFW.

The father of Atatiana Jefferson, the woman who was fatally shot by a Fort Worth police officer while playing video games with her nephew, has passed away.

"Please keep his family in your prayers", Carter said in a statement, "and tonight make sure you hug and tell your loved ones how much you love them".

Marquis Jefferson suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital Friday night, November 8, Carter said.

Carter told KDFW that Jefferson had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was under a lot of stress in the few weeks since his daughter's death.

Claiming that several of Atatiana's relatives had cut him out of the funeral planning process, the elder Jefferson filed a temporary restraining order to gain control of the funeral plans and her remains. A deal was eventually reached and the funeral was rescheduled. Family members said she had chose to move into the property in order to look after her ailing mother.

The officer was charged with murder in the October 12 shooting death of 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson - a case that has drawn national attention. "She say 'Tay was shot, '" he told CBS DFW.

Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was Marquis Jefferson's only child. Carter said Jefferson was battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which makes breathing hard.

A neighbor had called a police non-emergency line to report that Jefferson's front door was open. My daughter was 28 years old.

According to NBC5, she had grabbed a handgun from her purse after hearing a noise in her backyard and went towards a window.

Dean resigned from the Fort Worth Police Department and was charged with murder. Body camera footage from police showed two officers checked the perimeter of the house before one sees a figure through a window, the Star-Telegram reported.
