Ohio State No. 1, Clemson out in first rankings

That said, Dinich says the so-called "eye test" weighed heavily on Tuesday with Ohio State being ranked No. 1 ahead of LSU then Alabama, Penn State and Clemson among the five unbeatens at the top. The defending champions are not even in the top 4 and they are unbeaten as well.

The initial College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday and there were definitely some surprises throughout the list.

After all, Clemson is on a 24-game winning streak and is the victor of two of the past three CFP national titles, yet the Tigers are outside of the top four.

Ohio State led the way followed by LSU at No. 2. The two teams will play on November 23. MI (7-2) 15. Notre Dame (6-2) 16. The Maize and Blue beat Iowa by a score of 10-3 and blew out Notre Dame, 45-14.

The Ducks are the second highest ranked one-loss team, behind No.6 Georgia. That marks the primary time because the remaining rankings of 2014, the primary 12 months of this four-team playoff idea, through which Clemson doesn't occupy the highest 4.

Whereas LSU has a compelling schedule with wins over No. 10 Florida (7-2), No. 11 Auburn (7-2) and on the street in opposition to Texas, the Longhorns' dip to 6-Three in all probability aided the Tigers' dip to No. 2.

Collge Football Playoff Selection Committee chairperson Rob Mullens explained during the selection show that the committee talked at length about where to rank Penn State and Clemson.

On the strength of running back Travis Etienne (1,102 rushing yards), quarterback Trevor Lawrence (2,027 yards, 20 TDs) and a rebuilt defense (ACC-best 11.7 points per game), the Tigers have won their six ACC games this season by an average of 32 points.

The debate has already begun regarding which teams deserve the top four spots. Penn State has clearly played tougher competition and looked better doing it, but I believe the Tigers have put things together since nearly losing to North Carolina in Week 5. The Tigers' only shot for a ranked win may come against Wake Forest in Week 12.

LSU and Alabama are ranked two and three and play each other this weekend.

Minnesota has been strong against the spread this season as P.J. Fleck's squad has posted a 5-1-1 mark. Considering Clemson won the National Championship last season, some find it shocking they aren't cracking a berth right now.

Penn State at Indiana. We're just honored to be one of those teams that has a chance. It is hard to envision a scenario in which they can overcome a loss, the way they did in their 2016 championship season, unless there is absolute chaos down the stretch.
