Congress respects Ayodhya verdict, appeals for peace

A 16th Century mosque - said to have been built by the Mughal Emperor Babur - which stood at the spot was razed in December 1992 by right-wing activists.

As the Congress's fortunes dipped, its arch rival BJP emerged as the clear gainer, riding on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to national limelight and subsequent electoral victories.

"Whatever is the verdict by the Supreme Court, it won't be anybody's win or loss", Modi tweeted late Friday.

The judge said a temple for the Hindu god Ram should be built on the disputed plot by forming a trust under the control of the central governmen.

"In the short term, there will be a boost for the BJP", said Sircar. "Had the locks not been opened by [former Prime Minister] Rajiv Gandhi the Masjid would still be there, had [former Prime Minister] Narasimha Rao discharged his duties the Masjid would still be there". Muslims have been maintained they prayed at the Babri mosque on the site for generations until 1949, when an idol of Ram was mischievously placed inside the mosque. Notwithstanding these facts, Justice Chandrachud, third in seniority to Justice Gogoi and Justice S A Bobde, proactively involved himself during the Ayodhya hearing and put some searching question to the counsel for both Muslim and Hindu sides in the litigation.

Streets in Ayodhya were largely deserted and security personnel patrolled the main road to Lucknow, the capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

In Islamabad, Pakistan's foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, criticized the verdict, saying it was indicative of the "hate based mindset" of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

The top court on Saturday, citing archaeological evidence, said a structure located under the disputed site was not an Islamic structure. He added that the SC verdict on the sensitive and contentious issue must now receive a final closure, considering a detailed and credible analysis of the contentions of respective parties. "The temple of justice has amicably resolved the issue". "I am deeply saddened at the insensitivity shown at such a joyous occasion (Kartarpur Corridor opening)", Qureshi said.

"The recognition of our faith by the Supreme Court is of a great importance to us".

The CJI is also likely to announce the judgement on a criminal contempt plea filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for attributing the "chowkidaar chor hai" remark to the apex court. The court further said, however, that the title can not be established on the ground of faith and belief and they are only indicators for deciding the dispute. In the days that followed, 2,000 people died in riots across the country.

Pandey also said that barricading had been strengthened around Ayodhya. "The BJP can not make much out of it now as the matter now rests after the SC verdict", he said.

India's supreme court is expected to make a historic ruling on Saturday over the highly disputed religious site of Ayodhya, which is claimed by Hindus and Muslims.
