College basketball notebook: NCAA declares star Memphis freshman ineligible

The NCAA issued a statement Friday night in response to Wiseman's appearance in the game, saying "The University of Memphis was notified that James Wiseman is likely ineligible".

The NCAA suspended him for Penny Hardaway helping Wiseman and his family to move to Memphis.

James Wiseman, candidate for selection of potential No. 1 National Basketball Association, was deemed ineligible by the NCAA.

Memphis said the NCAA had declared Wiseman eligible in May.

Why was Wiseman able to play on Friday?

Wiseman played for Hardaway at East High during the 2017-18 season and committed to play for the Tigers in 2018 as Hardaway debuted as the Tigers' head coach. Hardaway was named the Memphis head coach in March of 2018.

Wiseman will consider the court when the Tigers consider on the UIC Flames on Friday night time, despite the announcement and the NCAA's ruling. However he scored 28 elements and skilled 11 rebounds Tuesday night time time in a 97-64 win over South Carolina Level out.

According to Wiseman's attorney, the NCAA informed Memphis that Wiseman was ruled ineligible on November 5th, before Memphis' season opener, which Wiseman played in. When asked how the Tigers would perform if Wiseman were, say, injured, Ellis said, "We got guys who would step up if we were without him".

He was the centerpiece of Memphis' No. 1-ranked recruiting class, a group that also included fellow five-star prospects Precious Achiuwa and D.J.

New athletic director Laird Veatch suggests Memphis will cooperate and be respectful and certified coping with the NCAA though "availing ourselves of each and every source" in the best pursuits of their faculty student-athletes, coach and college.

Without Wiseman, Memphis should still be a contender, but it raises the chances for more experienced teams like Houston, Cincinnati and Wichita State to win the conference this season.
