Pakistan Army spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor has said that Indian Sikh pilgrims would require a passport to use the Kartarpur Corridor, contrary to what Pakistan PM Imran Khan had stated on Twitter on November 1.

"I hope India and Pakistan relations improve enormously as a result of this beginning".

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced on Twitter that Indian pilgrims visiting the Baba Guru Nanak shrine for the 550 anniversary, on November 9 and 12, would not need to register 10 days in advance; would not require passports; and would not have to pay $20 service charges.

Imran Khan opened the border corridor on Saturday as thousands of Indian pilgrims waited to visit the Kartarpur shrine.

A total of 562 pilgrims were part of the first "jatha" who visited Gurdwara Darbar Sahib on the first day of the pilgrimage, a Home Ministry official said. India had requested Pakistan not to charge the Indian pilgrims but Pakistan refused to waive the fee. The prime minister will be presented a "siropa" (robe of honour) by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee for participating in the celebrations, former SGPC chief Jagir Kaur, who is incharge of celebrations, said.

Faisal told the press briefing that Pakistan remained committed to dialogue and would not hesitate to restore ties with India.

A historic "peace corridor" has opened to help Indian Sikhs visit a holy temple in Pakistan without a visa. But we never imagined we would ever be able to see it and have these feelings'. But this year, it has been advanced due to the birth anniversary of the founder of the Sikh faith, which is celebrated all over the world.

The deal allows for up to 5,000 pilgrims a day to cross a secure corridor and bridge between the two countries, leading directly to the grave of Guru Nanak.

His predecessor, Manmohan Singh, who led India for a decade from 2004, then guided the first delegation of pilgrims as they crossed into Pakistan.

Another most sacred place for the Sikhs is Nankana Sahib in Sheikhupura, the birth location of Baba Guru Nanak.

Pakistan has employed hundreds of labourers to spruce up the shrine, including building a border immigration checkpoint and a bridge, as well as expanding the site's grounds.

He said unprecedented gesture of goodwill from the Government of Pakistan is a reflection of its deep respect for Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji and religious sentiments of the Sikh community.

"If you look at the history, the foundation of Sikhism is from Pakistan".
