Bangladesh, India move hundreds of thousands away from Cyclone Bulbul

The weatherman has asked the Bengal administration to suspend fishing activities and ferry boat service on November 9 and 10 in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore districts.

It is set to reach wind speeds of up to 120km/h (75mph), with gusts of 150km/h, and create tidal surges in the sea and rivers when it hits the coastal regions, says the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

According to USA -based AccuWeather Inc., Bulbul strengthened from a deep depression into a tropical cyclone on Thursday morning, and by Friday afternoon had strengthened into a severe cyclone.

All flights at in and out of Kolkata airport were suspended for 12 hours and military planes and ships have been put on standby, Indian authorities said.

The West Bengal Government is working on war footing to minimize the impact of super cyclonic storm Bulbul which is likely to hit the state tonight.

The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm "Bulbul" (Pronounced as Bul bul) over northwest Bay of Bengal moved almost northwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 06 hours, and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 9 th November 2019, over northwest Bay of Bengal, near Lat.20.4°N and Long. Squally wind with speed of 50 to 60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph was likely to prevail over Kolkata during the night, the Met office said.

Forecasters expect the storm to move north, weakening gradually.

It suggested that coastal hutment dwellers be moved to safer places. Top officials of Odisha, West Bengal and Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands attended the meeting through video conference. While 14 teams of NDRF have been positioned, additional teams are being deployed at the request of states.

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), the country's apex body to handle any emergency, on Saturday reviewed the preparedness to deal with Cyclone Bulbul over the Bay of Bengal which is likely to affect coastal districts of Bengal and Odisha.

The sea condition is rough to very rough (13-20 ft wave height) along and off the Odisha and West Bengal coasts and is likely to become high to very high (20-30 ft) on Saturday and Sunday. Naval Officers-in-Charge, West Bengal and Odisha are in constant liaison with respective state administrations for rendering assistance as required, they added.

In India, the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha have received heavy rainfall since early Saturday (local time) and both states' coasts were forecast to get very heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said.
