Jordan: Republicans Will Subpoena Whistleblower for Public Hearing

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was assigned to the House Intelligence Committee ahead of public hearings related to the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

"Rick is an exemplary member of the House Intelligence Committee and fulfills his oversight responsibilities with a sense of seriousness, thoughtfulness, and dedication to our country".

The witness request "must be submitted in writing, and must be accompanied by a detailed written justification of the relevance to the inquiry of the testimony of each requested witness", Schiff said in a statement released on Thursday, citing a recently-passed House resolution formalizing proceedings of the impeachment inquiry. "When it is finished, Rick will rejoin the committee", McCarthy said.

"Jim Jordan has been on the front lines in the fight for fairness and truth".

Jordan and Meadows sit on the Oversight Committee, while New York's Zeldin serves on the Foreign Relations Committee. He's been present on the closed-door depositions, but he couldn't ask questions as he wasn't a member of the Intelligence Committee, which is chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). None of the three would have been in the public impeachment hearings on the Intelligence Committee if Crawford hadn't stepped aside.

The whistleblower complaint expressed concerns about Trump's July 25th phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, during which Trump asked Zelensky to investigate 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son's connections to a Ukrainian gas company.

Jordan said Thursday he doesn't know the identity of the whistleblower but that Schiff should call the person to testify.

The appointment comes as some Republicans have privately questioned whether Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, was prepared to mount a solid defense for Trump on the committee, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

"Next week, the House Intelligence Committee will hold its first open hearings as part of the impeachment inquiry", Schiff tweeted.

The subpoena from Republicans comes as Democrats continue to move the inquiry into a more public phase, releasing transcripts on Wednesday from the House's private hearings with USA diplomats who were close to the president's dealings with Ukraine.
