Democrats flip Virginia’s legislature; Kentucky governor’s race too close to call

"When you look at those three counties, where Bevin was running way behind where Donald Trump ran in 2016, if you replicate that in other states, huge, huge trouble for Trump".

Beshear's apparent win over Bevin was widely viewed as a humiliating defeat for Trump, who campaigned in Lexington on Monday and pleaded with his supporters to turn out for Bevin. "I'd guess 90% of his votes came from people who would have voted Republican but couldn't bring themselves to vote for [the outspoken and often caustic] Bevin".

The result could reverberate far beyond Kentucky. This is the third election in a row in which Democrats made significant gains since Trump was elected.

The local Courier Journal reported that Bevin has 30 days under state law to "formally contest the outcome once it is certified by the State Board of Elections".

Democrats took full control of the Virginia legislature for the first time in more than two decades while the race for governor in deeply Republican Kentucky was too close to call despite a last-minute boost from President Donald Trump.

Democrats will now hold all major statewide offices in Virginia and rule the state assembly, a comprehensive consolidation of power not seen there since the 1990s.

The elections offered insight into Trump's popularity among Republicans as he battles an accelerating impeachment inquiry.

He must contest the election to receive a recount of the votes.

Trump tried to rally Republicans via Twitter but stayed out of Virginia, a state he lost in 2016.

Not one GOP House member voted last week for a Democratic resolution to start the public phase of the process, and Republican senators, who will serve as jurors in a potential trial, have mostly shrugged off mounting evidence that Trump froze $400 million in military aid to Ukraine in an effort to pressure its president to investigate Democrats, including potential 2020 rival Joe Biden.

On Tuesday the party finished the job, winning both chambers of the state's legislature and delivering the party unified control of the state government for the first time since 1993. Then again, it is hard to know how much that election was really about Alabama voters rejecting Trump as it was about the numerous and credible allegations that the Republican nominee engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with minors.

Democratic pickups in Virginia occurred in Washington, D.C., and Richmond suburbs that already had trended in the party's direction in recent years. With Republican Gov. Phil Bryant term-limited, GOP nominee Tate Reeves defeated Democrat Jim Hood to extend the GOP's 20-year hold on the state's top office.

He said that he has no issue with Bevin asking for a re-canvass, that any candidate in a close election has the right to "double check", but that Republicans need to accept the unwelcome result and move on after that.

Tuesday's election also decided several important state ballot initiatives.
