GM, Union Reach Tentative Deal but Strike May Not End

Wednesday marked one month of the United Auto Workers nationwide strike against General Motors, and the two sides could be extremely close to a tentative agreement that gets more than 46,000 people back to work.

The UAW-GM strike isn't the only strike the union has going as it works through the negotiation process with two other companies: Aramark Corp. and Mack Trucks Inc.

SAMILTON: UAW leaders will present the tentative deal to local presidents and bargaining chiefs tomorrow.

After local union presidents hear what the tentative agreement is, they'll vote on whether or not workers remain on the picket line or pack it up until the vote.

The 32-day walkout by 50,000 GM workers centered on issues including a path to permanent work for temporary workers, pay raises or lump sum payments for UAW members and promises of investment at U.S. plants.

This is a developing story...

The automaker stated that on October 7, it presented an updated offer to the UAW, which might improve compensation and preserve health care benefits without raising out-of-pocket expenses.

Wall Street reacted favorably to the prospect of GM and its subsidiary parts makers soon returning to work. But they're also exhausted of striking and may return before they vote on the deal themselves.

Striking workers at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant said Saturday they're cautiously optimistic.

The Detroit Free Press reported workers won't have to pay more for health care under the deal, and would get bonuses of more than $8,000 each.

Approximately 49,000 union workers walked off their jobs on the night of September 15, starting a nationwide strike at General Motors after a previous labor contract expired and negotiations over a new one fell apart.

Trump spoke with Barra and UAW President Gary Jones on Wednesday, spokesmen for GM and the union affirmed.

In this agreement, you can see that UAW and GM decided about the negotiations.

The strike has slashed GM's operating profits by $2 billion and lowered take-home pay for workers by up to $4,000, according to analysis by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. "I could not be prouder of our brothers and sisters, our National Negotiators and the National Council as they continue to fight one day longer to secure the best deal for our members".

Specific terms of the tentative four-year contract were not released, but it's likely to include some pay raises and lump-sum payments to workers.
