U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan

The deceased have not been identified pending the notification of next of kin and officials did not say how they died.

There have now been 14 USA troops killed in combat-related incidents in the country this year, the highest number recorded by the Defense Department since 2014.

Two U.S. service members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday.

The troop pullout is a key Taliban demand.

After 18 years of war and months of direct talks with the Taliban leaders, the U.S. appears to be at the cusp of reaching a deal that could allow a pullout of foreign forces followed by a cease-fire between the warring sides.

A Taliban member said U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad also had a one-on-one meeting on Wednesday with the Taliban's lead negotiator, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, according to AP.

After the Doha talks, Khalilzad will need to lay the groundwork for peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government, which would come after any deal with Washington.

This week, Trump said it was "ridiculous" that US troops have been in the country for nearly 18 years. "We are negotiating with the government and we are negotiating with the Taliban", he said.

The talks are expected to focus on establishing a timeline for the U.S. withdrawal of its more than 13,000 troops in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan will not be significantly affected even if 5,000 US forces leave in the next five months, an option that has been under discussion, he added in a nationally televised interview.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the US military's role in Afghanistan had basically turned into a "ridiculous" police force in a sign that he is open to a US troop drawdown there after 18 years of war.
