Trump picks son of late Justice Scalia for labor secretary

Donald Trump announced Thursday he will nominate the son of late US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia for Labor Secretary, after Alex Acosta resigned in controversy from the post last week.

Scalia is a partner at a Washington-area law firm where he specializes in labor and employment matters.

Trump tweeted: 'I am pleased to announce that it is my intention to nominate Gene Scalia as the new Secretary of Labor.

Trump said on Twitter that Scalia "is highly respected not only as a lawyer, but as a lawyer with great experience working with labor and everyone else". Scalia also served as the Labor Department's top lawyer, the Solicitor of the U.S. Labor Department, during the George W. Bush administration.

Scalia, if confirmed, would take over a department that has been a key player in the Trump administration's campaign to cut business regulations, including many implemented during the Obama administration. The combination of these two leaders really makes 1 plus 1 equal 11.

Trump grew close to the Scalia family during the confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch, who replaced the late conservative justice on the high court. Cotton also consulted with his acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and White House counsel Pat Cipollone on Scalia, according to the aide, and all three men were present for Scalia's interview with the president on Thursday.

Under the Epstein deal, prosecutors reduced his federal sex trafficking charges to state prostitution charges, shaving off jail time. The Senate would ultimately be tasked with confirming Scalia's nomination.

Krischer said that after the state charged Epstein with a felony count of solicitation of prostitution, the U.S. Attorney's Office secured a 53-page indictment on felony charges, which he said was "abandoned after secret negotiations between Mr. Epstein's lawyers and Mr. Acosta".
