El Chapo sentenced to life in prison

In February of this year, a jury found Guzman guilty on all charges, which included drug trafficking and money laundering.

While federal prosecutors described El Chapo in court as "a ruthless and bloodthirsty leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, [whose] the horrific nature and circumstances of the defendant's offense, his history and characteristics and the fact that the defendant committed some of the most serious crimes under federal law make a life sentence warranted", her daughter views him in a different light.

Will the notorious Mexican drug lord known as "El Chapo" go quietly? "It could be potentially also the last time El Chapo could see his wife".

Richard Donoghue, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of NY, said the sentencing is "significant and it is well deserved", CNN reported.

Guzman claimed in 2014 that he had killed 2,000 to 3,000 people.

During the trial, prosecutors gave an extraordinary glimpse into the brutal and lucrative world of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel and how El Chapo became its mastermind, trafficking thousands of kilos of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine. Guzman also was ordered to pay $12.6 billion.

The identities of the jurors who decided his fate have remained anonymous for their own safety.

They have already asked Cogan to overturn it, citing a report that jurors disobeyed court rules by reading news reports about the case.

Instead, a defiant Guzman took a parting shot at a judge in federal court in Brooklyn by accusing him of making a mockery of the United States justice system in refusing to order a new trial based on unsubstantiated allegations of juror misconduct.

He is expected to serve his sentence at a high-security prison in Colorado. The facility is located in the desert, about two hours south of Denver, and no inmate has ever escaped.

Lichtman told CNN that "it's absolutely impossible" to escape from. Since then he has been held in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan, which is considered one of the most secure places in the United States.

His wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, 29, would the one to manage the company. But once he is transferred to Colorado, attorney visits may be more limited, she said.

He was extradited to the face trial in January 2017.

Mexico's Attorney General Arely Gomez shows a picture of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman during a press conference held at the Secretaria de Gobernacion in Mexico City, on Jul. 13, 2015.

In 2001, Guzman escaped by hiding in a laundry cart.

"Mr. Guzmán thought for more than 25 years that he was untouchable, that there was no problem affecting the Sinaloa cartel that he couldn't bribe, intimidate, torture or kill his way out of", said Brian Benczkowski, an assistant USA attorney general. On one occasion, he broke free by digging a mile-long tunnel from his cell.

For Joaquin Guzman, that's the biggest question at his sentencing in New York City on Wednesday.
