Wimbledon: Simona Halep tops Serena Williams for second Major title

Wimbledon: Simona Halep tops Serena Williams for second Major title

She showed incredible pace to get to balls most players would never be able to reach, and did more than that, often blasting unthinkable winners from impossible positions on the run.

Beaten Wimbledon finalist Serena Williams has said she has no plans to give up fighting for equality to focus exclusively on her tennis.

On the day, Williams, who was chasing her 24th grand slam win, was relegated to the role of bit-part actor as Halep produced an extraordinary performance. "She saw that she played unbelievably, and that's just the kind of person that she is".

She got off to a hot start, winning the first four games, and after going down 2-1 to start the second set, Halep rattled off five straight games to earn the win.

Williams, seeded 11th, was making make her 11th appearance in the singles finals at the All England Club and trying for her eighth title here.

Simona Halep says controlling her nerves and forgetting about who she was playing enabled her to play the match of her life and win Wimbledon. "Wake up Serena" someone yelled as Halep served for the first set at 5-2.

For Halep, it was a second Grand Slam title after a rebound at last year's French Open that had followed three losses in title matches at the Slams.

"It was an honour to play in front of her", she said.

Following the game, Williams also praised her own biggest royal fan: pal Meghan. "Once you win one, you treat it a little bit easier".

Serena Williams of The United States celebrates during The Ladies Singles Final against Angelique Kerber of Germany on day twelve of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 9, 2016 in London, England.

Williams has not won a grand slam final after losing the first set since 2005 so the size of the task was clear, but she was not up to it, Halep breaking serve again for 3-2 and never looking like faltering.

Since returning to tennis, Williams has dealt with injuries but still managed to remain among the game's elite.

Halep, 27, was steady as a backboard by contrast, absorbing Williams's power, running down sharply angled shots and avoiding unforced errors. (Three!) She seemed to always make Serena hit the extra ball. "I didn't expect this to happen".

Cahill's public pep talk - which was broadcast on TV - after his petulant charge threw away a set against Johanna Konta left Halep feeling "ashamed" and sparked her dramatic career revival.

"I don't know. I feel like I'm just really on this journey of just doing the best that I can". "That's why I was able to play my best, to be relaxed, and to be able to be positive and confident against her".

Halep was clearly nervous as she met the royal mother-of-three, attempting awkwardly to curtsey, only to be waved off by a smiling Catherine.
