'The blast rocked the popular Medina hotel formerly known as Cascasey which is located in downtown Kismayo, ' said security official Abdiweli Mohamed.

At least 40 people were injured in 14-hour siege in the city of Kismayo.

A Kenyan, American, British and Tanzanian were among those killed, said Ahmed Madobe, President of the southern region of Jubaland, quoted by the news portal Afrikan News.

"We believe. there were four gunmen involved in the attack and the death toll could be higher because we see (the) devastating consequences of the (bomb) blast and gunfire", he added.

One of the journalists killed by the militants is a Somali Canadian journalist Hodan Nalayeh.

Somalia's al-Shabab Islamic rebels have claimed the responsibility. "We are still fighting inside the hotel", he said. "We management the hotel now".

Juma's call for the listing of the Somali-based militant group under Resolution 1267 came against the backdrop of a multi-agency operation in search of two Cuban doctors abducted from the Mandera County Referral Hospital on April 12 by al-Shabaab militants, actions the Foreign Office termed as a flagrant violation of global humanitarian law.

Regional politicians and clan elders were alleged to be inside the hotel discussing a forthcoming regional election at the time of the attack.

Police officer Major Mohamed Abdi earlier told Reuters that security forces had ended the overnight attack. "She told stories of the most vulnerable people in some of the most challenging situations".

The Somalia office of the U.N.'s International Organization for Migration also said on Twitter one of its local staff members, Abdifatah Mohamed, was among those killed.

Nur said Nalayeh's death is a tragedy, not only for the Somali community, but for Canada as a whole.

According to the umbrella body, Mohammed Omar Sahal and Hodan Naleyah are the first two journalists killed in the country this year.

"I admired her so much for her work, and I'm still proud of her for giving back to the Somali community", she said.

Witnesses said among those killed were a well-known social media activist, her husband and a local journalist. "We're hopeful that we shall retrieve the doctors safely back home", the CS assured.

Nur was referring to elections in the city due sometime in August.

State-run Somali National News Agency said in a statement Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire had condemned the attack.

They were chased out of Mogadishu in 2011 and the Shebab then lost most of their strongholds.
