Simona Halep beats Serena Williams for Wimbledon title

Simona Halep beats Serena Williams for Wimbledon title

Simona Halep produced a dominant performance to defeat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the Wimbledon ladies' singles Final and claim her second career Slam title.

She's 37 and a mom, but Serena Williams says she is inspired by other veteran sports stars such as Roger Federer and Tiger Woods as she chases a record-equaling 24th grand slam title.

More on this as it develops.

"It is one of the best moments of my life", she told the BBC.

The Duchess of Sussex is a close friend of Williams, who organised her baby shower earlier this year. I knew there was no time for emotions.

Preying on the leaden-footed American, Halep ripped through Williams' defences with a devastating blend of mobility and precision.

Halep had beaten Williams just once in 10 previous meetings, at the WTA Finals five years ago, but finally ending her grand slam drought in her fourth final had changed her mentality.

Going for No. 24, Serena Williams will face Simona Halep in the Wimbledon final.

But she said those experiences had helped her here - on a surface that, as a player of 1.68m, she never thought she would be able to win on against "all these players that are very tall and serving with a lot of power".

Williams falls to 9-3 all-time against the 27-year-old Halep.

He said "if NASA's not now capable of landing American astronauts on the moon in five years, we need to change the organization, not the mission".

"She literally played out of her mind", Williams said. Overall, this is the absolute weapon's ninth singles Grand Slam title. I know they're lagging a little bit.

She also revealed she has been trying to get into the mindset that has made her the most dominant player of her generation.

But Halep breezed away with her first chance as Williams netted her to give Romania their first Wimbledon champion.

Williams may no longer be in her prime, but that's still good enough for No. 11 ranking in the world.

Williams, serving to stay in the opening set after just 25 minutes, held her serve to love to prolong the inevitable. "Physically I just wasn't there", Williams said Thursday after easily winning her semifinal 6-1, 6-2 against Barbara Strycova.

Simona Halep stressed the importance of the victory to her and her family in the post-match interview. It was the best match.

That allowed her to, if not exactly take control of the points, at least meet most of Williams' returns with her feet planted and ready to rally. I have no words to explain, but I feel great.

"I've worked hard for this, it's an honor to play in front of the Royal Box".

The Romanian had lost her first three grand slam finals but, since teaming up with Darren Cahill, she is a reformed competitor. I think the Wimbledon trophy, we'll be ditching the Logie. She's obviously done well to make this stage, although it's probably reasonable to suggest that having faced only one top 30 opponent, the draw opened up nicely for her.
