World Cup, Wimbledon Finals Clash With British GP, Leave Lewis Hamilton Baffled

Lewis Hamilton does not anticipate remaining in Formula One after he gives up driving.

On Sunday, that will be a whole lot harder. The race at Silverstone goes up against England in the Cricket World Cup final, the men's final at Wimbledon and the Tour de France.

Hamilton, the reigning F1 champion and current championship leader, is not happy he has to share the limelight with so many other sports.

"It has become the most anticipated event of the year for me and the one I enjoy the most", the Mercedes driver said as he looked forward to a Sunday that could bring him a seventh win in 10 races. In the cooler climes and fast corners of the Northamptonshire circuit, where they have won five of the past six races, they will expect to be back on the front foot. This is such a special weekend and it needs all the focus of the country and not a small amount.

Silverstone's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, and F1's owners, Liberty Media, signed a new five-year deal on Wednesday for the circuit to continue hosting the race. During Hamilton's bid for a record sixth home race win, cricket coverage will switch to a secondary channel. "Naturally I come here, there are a few of us Brits here, we come here to raise the flag and do the country proud". "It's such a privilege to be here".

The 33-year-old Frenchman is a veteran of over 150 grands prix but contrived to rattle his auto into barriers, spin and lose his front wing on the way out of the pits.

"The sheer magnitude of it, how many people come here". There is excitement and adrenaline going and there are pressures.

"This weekend it will be closer".

With Mercedes winning all but one race this year, a dominant run that was ended in Austria at the end of last month by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, they will again start as favourites.

He finished fifth. "We're here to improve this weekend as a team", Hamilton said. The last one was hard for us so I think it will be close'. "I think it will be close".

For Hamilton, who has four victories in five years here, his home race represents another chance to stamp his authority on his title challenge.

On Tuesday, it was announced that bosses from Silverstone and F1 had secured a new deal after two years of negotiations.

Mr Carey said: "Clearly we're thrilled to have this in place, Silverstone is one of the signature races on our calendar and truly a special event". "But if I stop racing I won't be here in any other capacity".
