Ursula von der Leyen would back last minute revocation of Article 50

Ursula von der Leyen would back last minute revocation of Article 50

This is the foundation - respect for the rule of law, she told a group of liberal deputies, adding that it was also vital to boost the competitiveness of the EU's economy.

"I still hope you will remain", Ursula von der Leyen, who hopes to be confirmed as president of the European Commission, told a hearing in the European Parliament ahead of a vote on her nomination next week. The move to reject the German defence minister, 60, from taking over Jean-Claude Juncker's role could plunge the European Union into a fresh crisis. The European Parliament is due to vote on her candidacy next week.

In a thinly veiled message to the Tory leadership candidates Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson, Von der Leyen said the tone and attitude with which Brexit happens were crucial, adding: "Brexit is not the end of something, Brexit is the beginning of future relations and it's of absolute importance that we have good cooperation".

Although it is expected Von der Leyen will be approved by the European parliament, she still faced sniping over the process of her appointment whereby she leapfrogged politicians who had declared bids to lead the commission before European elections.

However, that initiative was scuttled by leaders under pressure from France, Italy and several eastern member states.

So far, Ms Von der Leyen can count on the conservative European People's Party (EPP), which has 182 seats in the assembly, and most likely the liberals, who have 108 lawmakers.

"I welcome the commitments, given by Mrs Von der Leyen, to complete and strengthen the Capital Markets Union, but for Irish consumers, now facing sky-high interest rates and spiralling insurance premiums, this is a very theoretical response", he said. Both nations reject the accusations. The mechanism would consist in a mutual comparison of the situation in the individual member states.

As part of her pitch on Tuesday, Mrs von der Leyen tackled the thorny issue, calling on British lawmakers to take responsibility for sorting out the UK's departure.

While meeting with the free-market liberal group Renew Europe, she said it was a "brilliant idea" to hold a citizens dialogue about the future of Europe.

The defense minister and compromise candidate faces an uphill battle, as several members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voiced disapproval when EU leaders chose to ditch the "lead candidate" nomination process - in only the second instance of trying to use it - when European leaders couldn't agree on any of the candidates put forward by the party groups.

The nominee for the European Union's next chief executive said on Wednesday she hoped Britain would not quit the bloc and also urged EU governments to keep open a membership path for the Western Balkans.
