Dozens hurt as turbulence forces Air Canada flight to divert to Hawaii

An Air Canada flight was diverted on Thursday to Hawaii after a sudden case of severe turbulence left 35 customers with minor injuries, the carrier said in a statement.

Thirty five people sustained minor injuries and nine required treatment in hospital.

Air Canada Flight 33 requested an emergency landing and touched down in Honolulu at around 6:45 a.m. local time.

The plane was flying over the Pacific Ocean when it experienced "un-forecasted turbulence", CTV News reported.

A case of severe turbulence in June on a flight from Kosovo to France was captured on video, showing a flight attendant hitting the ceiling and another praying.

20 to 25 passengers and one crew member were allegedly injured, sustaining damage primarily to the head and neck.

Numerous people received head and neck injuries, CTV News reported, citing a source.

There were almost 270 passengers and 15 crew members on board in total. Air Canada says it's now making arrangements for passengers including hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu, as well as options for resumption of the flight.

The Boeing 777-200 was carrying 269 passengers and 15 crew members, according to Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick.

"We are now making arrangements for the passengers including hotel accommodations and meals in Honolulu, as well as options for resumption of the flight", an Air Canada spokesperson told CTV. All passengers that were injured during the turbulence and subsequent emergency landing are receiving medical treatment in Hawaii.
