The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast intensification of tropical cyclone Vayu in the next 12 hours, expecting widespread dust/thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall in three Sindh districts on Thursday and Friday.

As Gujarat and Diu are braving to face "very severe" cyclone Vayu, Home Minister Amit Shah Wednesday said authorities have evacuated about 3.1 lakh people living in the low-lying areas and the NDRF has pre-positioned 52 teams for rescue and relief operations.

Flight operations from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to Porbandar, Diu, Kandla, Mundra and Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra have been cancelled for Thursday, while all educational institutions have been shut and tourists on the Gujarat coast asked to steer out at the earliest, officials said.

"We have alerted all district collectors of coastal Gujarat to take immediate steps keeping in mind the likelihood of a cyclone", Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Pankaj Kumar told reporters. "The cyclone's effect will prevail over Gujarat on June 12, 13 and 14", he added.

As per the latest projections, "Vayu" is intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm". The ministry is in continuous touch with the state governments and Union territories like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Daman and Diu, which may be affected due to the cyclone.

Officials said as many as 47 National Disaster Response Force and others had arrived in Gujarat.

Nayara Energy, owned by a consortium led by Russia's Rosneft, said it was monitoring the situation and also taking precautionary measures at its Gujarat refinery.

Gujarat is also home to large refineries and sea ports near the storm's path.

The severe cyclonic storm is likely to cause heavy rains and winds in the coastal districts of Saurashtra, such as Amreli, Dwarka, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar and Kutch.

The state government said it had begun moving about 300,000 people from the most vulnerable areas into shelters.
