Noted playwright-actor Girish Karnad passes away at 81

The Jnanapith Award recipient made his acting and screenwriting debut in the Kannada movie Samskara in 1970, based on a novel by U.R. Ananthamurthy and won the first President's Golden Lotus Award for Kannada cinema. Dr Girish Karnad acted in only one Marathi movie Umbartha directed by Dr Jabbar Patel.

Girish Karnad was also a presenter of award-winning TV series - Turning Point on Doordarshan National during the 1990s. He graduated from the Karnataka University, and was a Rhodes Scholar in the University of Oxford, where he studied philosophy, politics and economics.

The last rites of the departed soul will be held in Kalpali electric crematorium, Bengaluru, at 4.30 pm on Monday.

"Though the Karnataka government chose to conduct Karnad's last rites with state honours, we have made a decision to respect his wishes and allowed his family to do it accordingly", an official told IANS.

Born in Matheran, now in Maharashtra, Karnad had moved to Dharwad in Karnataka with his parents as a boy. She met Dr Raghunath Karnad and tied the knot after five years of courtship despite opposition from the conservative Hindu society. In 1992, India's third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was conferred on Karnad.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Modi and chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy expressed their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter in order to mourn the demise of the talented personality. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him.

Karnad, who often used history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues, had his works translated into various Indian languages and helmed by directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B V Karanth and Alyque Padamsee among others. "His outstanding contribution to literature, theatre and films will always be remembered". "In his death, we lost a cultural ambassador".

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also conveyed his heartfelt grief by posting a tweet which said, "Sad news coming in the morning about the passing away of veteran noted actor and playwright Girish Karnad. I wrote this tribute to him on his 80th birthday", Guha tweeted.
