Former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari arrested

It is pertinent to note that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has already issued arrest warrants for the former president in the case. At least 300 policemen were been deployed for security goal outside NAB headquarters, while roads leading to accountability court will remain closed for all kind of traffic.

The development came hours after a court in Islamabad rejected a request by Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur for an extension of their bail that would have allowed them to remain free pending trial in the case. Police personnel, including women officials, entered the former President's house after the court decision.

Pakistan's anti-graft body on Monday arrested former President Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated ex-Premier Benazir Bhutto, in a multimillion dollar money laundering case that has shaken the country.

Over two dozen politicians and others have been under investigation for money laundering from fictitious accounts, including Zardari and Talpur.

The court has handed over the erstwhile president to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and directed the anti-corruption watchdog to produce Asif Ali Zardari before it on June 21 after interrogations. Zardari's close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July 2018 in connection with the probe.

According to the NAB officials, the duo made transactions of Rs 150 million through alleged fake bank accounts.

The amount is said to be black money gathered from various kickbacks, commissions and bribes.
