Crane collapses during storm in Dallas, killing 1 woman

Evans said one person was found dead in a residential portion of the five-story building hardest hit by the fallen crane, and six others were taken to hospitals, two of them in critical condition.

"It just sliced through the building. like a hot knife through butter", she said. He said did not know whether the crane was in operation at the time. After an agonising wait that she said "felt like a year", authorities told her her husband was injured but had survived, holding on to the family dog.

"We just saw cars everywhere".

Sammy Sandquist also lives in the apartment building but was not there at the time when the crane fell.

Apartment management on Sunday evening were still working to account for all residents, but there were no reports of missing people, Evans said.

Severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail and potential tornadoes were blowing Sunday through downtown Dallas and nearby Fort Worth, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service says winds could exceed 110 kilometres per hour.

"This was in response to a Mesoscale Convective Complex, a group of organized thunderstorms which originated in Oklahoma earlier in the morning", Norman said. Multiple resources, to include Fire Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Urban Search and Rescue and Hazardous Materials assets, were dispatched to the scene to help mitigate the situation following reports of multiple collapses resulting in multiple injuries.

By 4 p.m., the storm had moved south of Dallas, leaving a mess of downed trees, some street flooding and other wind damage across the metropolitan area.

The system left Dallas around 2:45 p.m., Norman said.

It comes after severe storms had ripped through north Texas, particularly the city of Dallas.
