White meat has same effect on cholesterol as red meat, study finds

A new study reveals that no matter what type of meat you're eating, red or white, if you're consuming a lot it will still give you higher blood cholesterol levels than eating similar amounts of plant protein.

Many people choose white meat over red meat as it is thought to be a healthier option. LDL stands for low-density lipoproteins and is often dubbed "bad cholesterol".

The new research had a few confinements; the meats in the investigation did exclude grass-nourished hamburger or handled items, including bacon or hotdog. Between each eating routine period, the people were given a washout period, during which they ate their normal food. Blood samples were collected from all the participants at the start and finish of each test diet.

"Our results indicate that current advice to restrict red meat and not white meat should not be based only on their effects on blood cholesterol", the study senior author Ronald Krauss, M.D., said. It has been widely believed that large particles do not contribute as much as small particles to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) risk, but recent research suggests that both small and large bad cholesterol particles are associated with atherosclerosis. Krauss is the senior scientist and director of Atherosclerosis Research at CHORI.

The investigation uncovered there were no huge contrasts in the measures of LDL particles of various sizes in individuals while on the white meat and red meat counts calories. However, a high saturated fat diet was associated with a higher concentration of large LDL particles, though no association was seen in relation to small or medium particles.

So if you want to bring your cholesterol down, experts advise sticking to a plant-based diet.

A diet consisting of red meat has always been linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Each participant was assigned to either a high-saturated or low-saturated fat group, and cycled through three test diets of red meat, white meat and nonmeat for four weeks each.

The study is well executed and rigorous, Hunnes said.

There had been no comprehensive comparison of the effects of red meat, white meat and nonmeat proteins on blood cholesterol until now, Krauss said. "All great messages in my book!"

The bottom line is red and white meats are equal in dietary terms - lean poultry is the same as lean beef when it comes to cholesterol. It should be noted that fish were not included in this assessment.
