Astronauts Will Perform a Spacewalk Outside the Space Station

Expedition 59 commander Oleg Kononenko and fellow cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin stepped out of the space station at 11:42 a.m. and returned about 6 hours later to close the hatch at 5:43 p.m. after completing the spacewalk, which was being live streamed on NASA's YouTube channel.

"Kononenko, who will be designated extravehicular crew member 1 (EV1), in the suit with red stripes, and Ovchinin, who will be EV2, in the suit with blue stripes, will install handrails on the Russian segment of the complex, retrieve science experiments from the Poisk module's hull, and conduct maintenance work", NASA officials wrote in a spacewalk preview. Leonov, a pioneer of the Soviet space program who made history with his 1965 orbital outing and took part in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project a decade later, turns 85 on Thursday. They also showed off a photo of Leonov that they carried outside with them. "You're with us here and now in outer space, and for the entire duration of this spacewalk you will be here with us".

Today's spacewalk went so smoothly that the duo finished up about a half-hour earlier than planned.

Wednesday's spacewalk will be the 217th that will support station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades to the Space Station.

Their crewmates - NASA's Nick Hague and Anne McClain, plus Canada's David Saint-Jacques - monitored the spacewalkers' progress from inside the station.

Kononenko is set to return to earth on June 24 after a 6.5-month mission living and working on the space station. Ovchinin will replace him as the station's commander.
