Firefighter Among 2 Killed in Wis. Shooting

The firefighter died after he was rushed to a local hospital, the department said in a statement posted to Facebook.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The man was given help on the bus, then eventually left and started walking toward a nearby library.

Police say that while the man was being attended, "the incident escalated " and shots were fired.

Firefighter Mitch Lundgaard was killed. The woman was hospitalized in stable condition, and the officer was treated and released.

Cash said it was disheartening that this happened during National Police Week, when the nation recognizes the sacrifices of officers. Police didn't immediately respond to a message seeking additional details.

A long line of emergency vehicles escorted Lundgaard's body from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office in Milwaukee, where an autopsy was done, back to Appleton on Thursday.

Appleton is about 120 miles (193 kilometers) north of Milwaukee.

The procession carrying the Appleton Firefighter passed through Allenton at 11:59 a.m.

One of the others who was shot is an Appleton police officer who is recovering at a local hospital. Representatives of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association responded to the scene, executive director Jim Palmer said.

Officials have not yet identified the firefighter.

Police are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting and exactly how many rounds went off. Police could not confirm anyone was in custody but the said there is "no ongoing threat to the community".

The Appleton Fire Department says the firefighter who was shot Wednesday night has died.

Meghan Cash of the Appleton Police Department says police and fire departments responded to the transit center for a medical call, and while they were there "the situation was very active" and there was a shooting.

Firefighters stood silently at the medical examiner's office as the procession began, just as they had when the body arrived in a flag-draped casket overnight.
