Yankees’ Miguel Andujar To Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Likely To Miss Season

Yankees’ Miguel Andujar To Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Likely To Miss Season

Andujar finally decided on season-ending surgery to fix the partial tear in his right shoulder labrum because it hurt too much and it was affecting his play, his agent said, according to the New York Times' James Wagner.

NY announced the decision Wednesday night during the second game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.

The pain was too much to take for Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar. Manager Aaron Boone had said Andújar was discussing a possible operation with the team and his family.

Andujar elected to have surgery to fix a torn labrum in his right shoulder after returning to the injured list on Monday.

The 24-year-old will have the operation on Monday in NY. Andujar was a key middle-of-the-order presence for last year's 100-win Yankees club, and while there's no shortage or internal options to replace him on a fully healthy club, it's also unlikely that any of the alternatives can match that level of offensive output.

Andujar had an outstanding rookie campaign past year batting.297/.328/.527 with 27 home runs and 92 RBIs in 149 games.

The Yankees and Andujar decided the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year runner-up would try to rehabilitate the injury rather than opt for immediate surgery. He won't be eligible for arbitration until after the 2020 season and won't be a free agent until the 2023-24 offseason.
