U.S. orders embassy staff from Iraq over 'imminent' Iran threat

Earlier today, all "nonemergency USA government employees" at both the embassy in Baghdad and the United States consulate in Erbil were ordered to leave Iraq, The New York Times reported.

His comments came amid increasing tensions with the United States and President Donald Trump's decision to station an aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, and a bomber jet squadron in the region. Iraqi officials expressed skepticism about any purported threats - as did a senior British official who is the deputy commander of the American-led coalition fighting the Islamic State.

Washington says it has received intelligence on possible attacks by Iranian or Iranian-backed forces, possibly targeting U.S. bases in Iraq or Syria.

The United States has sent further military forces to the Middle East, including an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers and Patriot missiles, in a show of force against what USA officials say are Iranian threats to its troops and interests in the region.

European Union chief Federica Mogherini said on Monday that she does not want to see a military escalation between the U.S. and Iran. Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu may be the only world leader who has proactively praised the Trump Administration's tough stance on Iran.

Saudi Arabia shared the concerns of its fellow Sunni Muslim ally that Shi'ite Iran has for a long time been undermining stability in the region, he said, and the United States' commitment to its allies in the region is "very strong". Washington did not publicly provide any evidence to back up claims of an increased threat from Tehran. Anti-U.S. sectarian militias may also threaten U.S. citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq.

"We will also retaliate and retaliate hard when we see the Houthis hit civilian targets within Saudi Arabia", Gargash said.

The supreme leader said dealing with the USA was "poison", Reuters reported, and suggested that negotiating "with the present American government is doubly poisonous".

Iran is committed to its obligations under an worldwide nuclear deal despite the US withdrawal from the landmark agreement, its foreign minister said on Thursday, calling the reimposition of sanctions by Washington "unacceptable". "If we did that, we'd send a hell of a lot more troops than that".

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, played down the prospect of conflict on Tuesday, saying neither country wanted a war, according to state media.

"The definite decision of the Iranian nation is to resist against America".

Germany, which has 160 soldiers in Iraq, and the Netherlands which has 169 military and civilian staff, suspended military training operations, citing regional tensions.

"Neither we, nor them, is seeking war".

However, while the European Union has issued statements critical of Iran, they have not supported United States claims of imminent Iranian attacks.

"They have no business declaring a war without the consent of Congress", she said. "I am committed to ensuring that majorities of the House of Representatives and the Senate make clear that before the president takes any military action, in Iran or anywhere else, he must seek authorization from Congress".
