Koons's 'Rabbit' fetches record 91m dollars at NY auction

Steve Mnuchin's dad, Robert Mnuchin, paid a staggering $91 million for a 1986 stainless steel "rabbit" statue by the artist Jeff Koons at a Christie's auction in NY.

Art dealer Bob Mnuchin, the father of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, made the winning bid for the Koons work, Bloomberg reported.

The previous record for a living artist was set by David Hockney in November 2018 after a fierce battle between two phone-in bidders saw "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" fetch £70m.

The sculpture, which stands just over three feet high, is made of stainless steel and based on an inflatable children's toy, according to the auction house.

The artwork auctioned Wednesday comes from the collection of late media mogul S.I. Newhouse.

The sculpture was projected to sell for $70 million but exceeded expectations when Robert Mnuchin outbid several Asian investors. It has not been publicly exhibited since 1988, two years after it was first shown at New York's Ileana Sonnabend's gallery. Also, a blow-up version appeared in the 2007 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

On its website Christie's described Rabbit as "cute, sinister, cartoonish, imposing, vacuous, sexy, chilling, dazzling and iconic".

"It is crisp and cool in its appearance, yet taps into the visual language of childhood, of all that is pure and innocent".
