Georgia Engel, star of ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ dies at 70

Actress Georgia Engel, well known for her role on "Mary Tyler Moore Show", died at the age of 70, according to The New York Times. The cause was undetermined, Quilty told the Times, because Engel, a Christian Scientist, did not consult doctors.

Engel died Friday in Princeton, N.J., said her friend and executor, John Quilty.

Engel's other acting credits included film appearances in Dr Dolittle 2, The Sweetest Thing and TV shows such as The Office and Two And A Half Men.

She had been nominated five times for the Primetime Emmy award.

The actress appeared in 56 episodes of the series as Georgette - the love interest of anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight.

Speaking to The Toronto Star in 2007, Engel recalled how her most famous role had started out as a much smaller part.

Engel could be as upbeat as the fictional Georgette, as was demonstrated during a panel discussion a year ago promoting the 2018 PBS special, Betty White: First Lady of Television.

Georgia's most recently Broadway role was as Mrs. Tottendale in the original production of The Drowsy Chaperone. She went on to join her Mary Tyler Moore Show co-star Betty White on White's self-titled CBS sitcom, and play a memorable role as Howard's wife Shirley on the ABC comedy Coach.

Engel reunited with "Mary Tyler Moore's" Gavin MacLeod in 2018.
