Damian McKenzie Ruled Out Of World Cup After Rupturing ACL

Damian McKenzie is the latest to be sidelined after limping off with knee damage during Saturday's bruising Super Rugby derby match between the Waikato Chiefs and Auckland Blues.

However, Hansen said an agreement with New Zealand Rugby and the five Kiwi Super Rugby franchises around the foundation days - another will be held in Auckland on May 20 for the North Island players and in Christchurch on June 3 for the South Islanders - meant only those involved with the All Blacks past year could be included.

Mckenzie has been diagnosed with a tear of the ACL - a key ligament in the knee.

His fellow All Blacks Brodie Retallick and Nathan Harris also took severe knocks in the Chiefs' 33-29 victory but their injuries were said to be not serious.

'He's done an ACL and looks to be out for eight to nine months which is a real shame for him, ' said All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.

"His World Cup opportunity's gone but he's still young enough to make probably the next two".

"It's sad for him but obviously creates a dream for somebody else".

He walked from the field with the help of a Chiefs medic but appeared in pain, and went on to have an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury.

Hansen believed he has the personnel to cover McKenzie's loss, singling out five-eighths Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo'unga and outside backs Ben Smith and Jordie Barrett as players blessed with versatile skills.

Hansen said the selectors had chose to invite only players involved in the All Blacks' 2018 campaign.

The Rugby World will be held from September 20 to November 2.
