Israeli president Reuven Rivlin, right, is welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron on his arrival at the Elysee Palace in Paris on January 23, 2019.

"The weight of the water and the intensity of the drop at low altitude could indeed weaken the structure of Notre-Dame and cause collateral damage to the surrounding buildings", the agency said in a tweet.

"Hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the bad #NotreDame fire under control", the civil protection service said in a statement.

Macron tweeted: "Our Lady of Paris in flames". Red smoke is pouring out of the cathedral.

Notre Dame is not a parish church, meaning that it does not have a regular body of worshippers who "belong" to the church. The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, features in Victor Hugo's classic novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame".

"This is one of the jewels of Paris", said Creed as she watched. "My thoughts are with all the Catholics and all the French".

"Like all of my countrymen, I am sad tonight to see this part of us burn".

And every year during Holy Week, Notre Dame unveils some of the most coveted relics in Christendom.

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most visited landmarks in the world, and the most visited in Paris.

In Washington, Trump tweeted: "So disgusting to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris" and suggested first responders use "flying water tankers" to put it out.

"Notre Dame is a victim of the flames".

"Built in the 13th century, the medieval cathedral is considered a feat of architecture as much as a religious symbol", CNN writes. Paris police said there were no reported deaths. The police department didn't say anything about injuries. "Took this photo when I was there last month, one of the most breathtaking places I've ever seen".

The sight stopped pedestrians in their tracks along the Seine River, which passes under the cathedral.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to battle the inferno, but the fire is not contained at the time of publication; AFP reports that the fire is "partially connected" to a $6.8 million renovation project going on at the cathedral, and is being treated as an accident.

It is unclear whether anyone has been hurt.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo described it as a "terrible fire" and urged people at the scene to stay safe.
