World’s largest plane makes first flight

Stratolaunch, the world's largest aircraft type by wingspan, has taken off on its maiden flight on Saturday.

An odd-looking, double-bodied airplane with a wingspan as long as a football field just took to the skies today (April 13) from the Mojave Air & Space Port in California. Stratolaunch was founded by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2011 to develop large carrier airplane as a flying launch pad for orbital-class rockets. "We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today's flight crew, our partners at Northup Grumman's Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port".

"It was an emotional moment for me, personally, to watch this majestic bird take flight", Stratolaunch's CEO Jean Floyd said during a press call. "It was a very smooth flight and the team had a lot of fun", said test pilot Evan Thomas after the flight. The jet flew for two and a half hours, achieving a maximum speed of 189 mph and altitudes up to 17,000 feet, the company said.

"Today's flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground launched systems", he added.

In simple terms, the Stratolaunch aircraft is a giant flying launch pad, created to hurtle satellites into low Earth orbit. Mr Allen died in October 2018.

Nearly 116 years after the Wright Brothers created history at Kitty Hawk with the first heavier than air flight ever for 12 seconds, another piece of aviation history was created at Nojav in California on Saturday.

"It's so huge, it seems like it shouldn't be able to fly", aerospace and launch photographer for Jack Beyer told CNN.

Although the cost of the airplane hasn't been made public, other details are known.

The idea is to fly the plane to 10 km (6.2 miles) before releasing satellites into orbit.

Stratolaunch has said that it intends to launch its first rockets from the Roc in 2020 at the earliest Photo: Reuters. "People want to see what's next".

Built by California-based company Scaled Composites (owned by Northrop Grumman), the ginormous plane is created to ferry rockets and various types of spacecraft into orbit.

If all goes as planned, Stratolaunch said the plane is expected to launch its first satellite sometime next year.
