Sudanese want 'immediate' move to civilian rule

"There are clear demands and unless they are met, there is no escape but to publicise full rejection (of the council's moves)", the SPA statement said, urging citizens to continue a sit-in outside the Defence Ministry.

They reiterated their rejection of military rule.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has been leading protests to demand a civilian government, called for more demonstrations earlier on Saturday.

A sit-in in the Sudanese capital, which began on April 6, was the culmination of a protest movement that began almost four months ago, triggered by a worsening economic crisis.

"The UAE reaffirms its support for the steps taken by Sudan's transitional military council to protect people and property, wishing these steps would ensure security and stability for the sisterly country", the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said on Saturday according to state news agency WAM.

The EU urged the army to carry out a swift handover to civilian rule, and former colonial ruler Britain said that the two-year transition announced by the military "is not the answer".

The new leader of Sudan's interim military council vowed yesterday to "uproot the regime" in a conciliatory speech two days after a military coup, the BBC reported.

Himeidti heads Sudan's controversial counter-insurgency unit - the Rapid Support Force (RSF) - which rights groups have accused of abuses in the war-torn Darfur region.

He also said he was lifting the nighttime curfew imposed Thursday, which was supposed to have lasted a month, and he declared the immediate release of all those detained and tried during the wave of unrest that began in December.

Gen Al Burhan also pledged that people implicated in killing protesters would face justice and that demonstrators held under a recent state of emergency would be freed.
