Reputed Gambino crime boss shot and killed outside home in NY

Police are now investigating the matter and have yet to arrest anyone in connection.

The grisly scene saw Francesco "Frank" Cali shot dead outside his colonial-style red-brick home on Staten Island, police said Thursday.

Shea says Cali emerged from his home around 9:15 p.m. after the suspect backed his pickup truck into Cali's Cadillac SUV.

His murder is the first of a NY mob boss since Paul Castellano was famously assassinated at Sparks Steakhouse in 1985.

The Sicily native, who is married to John Gambino's niece, served on the family's ruling panel for several years before being promoted to acting boss in 2015, replacing the previous leader Domenico Cefalu, also known as "Greaseball". He was convicted of racketeering and murder in 1992 and later died in prison.

A SUSPECTED mafia crime boss has been shot and killed outside his NY home.

Sources said the getaway vehicle was a blue pickup truck, reported NBC New York.

The Gambino Family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the US, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying.

The Gambino family was once considered the biggest organised crime group in the USA, the New York Times reports, but began to decline after Gotti and other senior figures were jailed. "But I guess old habits die hard".

Gambino headed the organization until 1976, when he handed power over to his brother-in-law Paul Castellano.

"Even Gotti had more respect", one police source told the New York Post.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola, a reputed associate of the Bonanno organisation, was shot dead at a takeaway restaurant in the Bronx, New York.

After prosecutors called him "a danger to the community" Pandrella, 59, pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn federal court to accusations of shooting Zito in his own home and stealing money from him.

Weiss explains that the younger Gotti and Cali had often clashed 30 years ago, and upon his return, reignited their feud.

Ronen Manelis, the chief Israeli military spokesman, said the army had been caught off guard by Thursday night's rocket barrage. Tensions between Israel and Gaza have been boiling ever since Palestinians began violent protests near Israel's border fence.
