New Zealand terror attack

New Zealand's prime minister Jacinda Arden has vowed to change the country's gun laws in the wake of the shooting spree that stunned the world.

She said Tarrant, who has been arrested and charged with murder and committing a terrorist act, had allegedly used five firearms, including two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.

People from at least half a dozen countries and young children were among the 49 people killed in shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday.

A short distance away, 39 people were being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds and other injuries inflicted in the massacre. New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said more charges would be laid.

She said the man was arrested by two "rural community cops" 36 minutes after the first emergency call was made on Friday and was still an active shooter.

There are now four individuals who have been apprehended, but three are connected to this attack who are now in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian-born.

The suspect allegedly live-streamed the killings on Facebook, where graphic footage shows countless people being shot at close range.

"Just spoke with Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, regarding the horrific events that have taken place over the past 24 hours".

Most guns do not require registration under New Zealand's Arms Act and police do not know "how many legally or illegally owned firearms there are in New Zealand", police said previous year.

Despite mentioning Roof, it was Breivik, who her referred to as "Knight Justiciar Breivik", as a person he "took true inspiration from", wrote Tarrant.

Police in Tarrant's home state of New South Wales said they had spoken to his family, who called police after seeing the attacks reported on the news.

Worshipers ran from gunfire, desperately called police and huddled beneath the benches of two Christchurch mosques before two lightly armed community police officers apparently ran the gunman's vehicle to the side of the road and brought the atrocity to an end after a terrifying 36 minutes.

Tarrant is an Australian citizen who was living in the southern city of Dunedin at the time of the attack, Prime Minister Ardern said.

The suspect will remain in custody without a plea and will appear in court again on April 5.

"I am deeply saddened by the terror attack in New Zealand & stand with our Muslim community to condemn this hate-fuelled violence", Mayor John Tory tweeted.

In fact, for many, New Zealand was a choice, a place they actively came to and committed themselves to, the place they were raising their families, where they were part of communities they loved and who loved them. "I don't think this country, would say that rugby was the most important thing".

Until Friday, the country's worst mass shooting was in 1990, when a lone gunman killed 13 people in the small town of Aramoana.

It was by far the deadliest shooting in modern New Zealand history.
