Mob Boss Gunned Down Outside Staten Island Home

A 24-year-old Staten Island man has been arrested in Brick Township in connection with the slaying of the boss of the Gambino crime family.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organized crime in NY and New Jersey.

The report said the man is from Staten Island, where the fatal shooting of Cali occurred Wednesday in front of his home in the Hilltop Terrace section of the borough. "We are at the beginning stages of this investigation", Shea said.

Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck.

Asked about Comello's arrest record, Shea said he "crossed paths in some limited circumstances with the NYPD" including getting a parking ticket on Staten Island the day Cali was killed. An assistant DA there referred a reporter to the office's public information officer, who was not immediately available.

The Gambino family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the USA, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach. Cali was convicted in an extortion scheme in the late 2000s and served 16 months in federal prison.

Police say they are still investigating whether Cali's murder was a mob hit or whether he was killed for some other motive.

Police said Cali was the boss of the Gambino crime family, which at one point was believed to be the largest and most influential mob in the country.
