'Bomb cyclone' pushes east across the U.S., flood risks remain

Although Colorado saw the bomb cyclone manifest itself in the form of snow, rain is the main culprit in Iowa and IL.

This video shows firefighters from Denver's South Metro Fire Rescue crew braving blizzard conditions on a call-out to a property in Parker, Colorado, after strong winds blew a fence into a gas meter.

The "bomb cyclone" late winter storm is swirling eastwards after wreaking havoc in western states.

Weather service meteorologist Peter Rogers says flooding is likely to persist into the weekend.

"Widespread and extremely unsafe flooding will continue today and tonight", the National Weather Service office in Omaha, Nebraska, said on Friday in a statement.

Officials in Nebraska said they expected flooding there to worsen - potentially to record levels.

Blizzard conditions and flooding closed numerous roadways in the region. On Thursday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed an emergency disaster proclamation and activated the state emergency operations center, and all or part of nine state parks were closed due to rising floodwaters.

Scores of motorists took refuge at truck stops in eastern Wyoming while blowing snow forced portions of major highways to close in Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota.

The blizzard, bringing severe snowfall, poor visibility and powerful winds, caused hundreds of flight cancellations and thousands of power outages in Colorado and Texas.

"We do know that here is a link between the warming Arctic and the weather patterns in the mid-latitudes", she said.

A wind gust of 92 miles per hour (148 kph) was recorded in the mountains northwest of Denver.

"Travel will remain hard and life threatening across these areas, with improving conditions Thursday night into Friday as the storm pushes farther off to the northeast", the NWS says.

In Colorado, a state patrol officer was hit and killed by a vehicle as he was helping another driver who slid off Interstate 76 near Denver. According to the National Weather Service, areas like Dallas and Colorado are now the most affected, but wider estimates predict that millions of Americans across the central region could be directly hit in the next few days. It was caused by a combination of the jet stream and normal conditions in the wind shadow of the Rockies.

About 50 National Guard soldiers and airmen used specialized vehicles with tank-like treads to rescue 75 people stranded in their cars during the storm.

A bomb cyclone occurs when there is a rapid pressure drop that occurs over the course of 24 hours.

Five people were hurt and 150 dairy cows had to be euthanized when a tornado hit the small town of Dexter, New Mexico. There were no immediate reports of injuries. He police said people should be careful during the exit. On Thursday the low pressure storm created nine tornadoes that ripped through Ohio, Kentucky (top and bottom right), Alabama and MI. When that much air rushes higher into the atmosphere, it causes severe weather.
