Hamilton cited that Ferrari have the edge going into Melbourne after they had a promising pre-season in terms of testing.

Mercedes vs Ferrari: What happened last season?

Williams has endured an extremely tough pre-season after an equally hard 2018 campaign that saw previous drivers Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin score only seven points between them, but the Grove-based outfit are fielding an all-new line-up in Kubica and 2018 FIA Formula 2 champion George Russell.

Ferrari's impressive display in testing makes Valtteri Bottas believe Mercedes will have to fight to stay with their rivals in Australia.

"Over the winter some things have been different, like with my coach again we looked through the travel plan and everything, all the details that we think is going to be best for my performance, like where I am between races, where do I fly, when do I fly".

But Mercedes' Hamilton won his fifth world title with two races still left.

1 - Ferrari driver Vettel is one win away from equalling Schumacher as the driver with the most wins (four) and most back-to-back victories (3 - 2000-02) at the AusGP.

Under different management and after a positive winter testing, Ferrari have arrived in Melbourne with a fast auto and plenty of buzz, raising expectation of a genuine challenge to five years of Mercedes dominance. "Lewis has been in that position the last couple of years and we will try to turn it around", he said.

"But an F1 season is not just about who comes out of the blocks quickest", he added.

"This is going to be the toughest battle yet", said the Briton, although Mercedes, who have won five drivers' and constructors' titles in a row, may not have shown their full hand yet. We got a bit lucky during the race weekend with the safety vehicle to grab the win.

Mercedes have done that in the past, but there is a growing feeling in the paddock that Ferrari could have the edge this season, with a new team principal in place, after Mattia Binotto replaced Maurizio Arrivabene, and a faster auto.

The cars feature new front and rear wings, aimed at making it easier for them to get closer and overtake, while the driver that sets the fastest lap can earn an additional championship point, so long as he finishes in the top 10 in Sunday's race.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who is known for naming each of his race cars, revealed that his new auto is called "Lina".

Vettel is keen on having some fun.
