UK PM May Says She Will Vote Against a 'No-Deal' Brexit

The pound against the United States dollar (GBPUSD=X) rocketed in the immediate aftermath of parliament voting to reject leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement.

Lawmakers will now vote on Thursday to decide whether Brexit should be postponed beyond the current March 29 deadline.

Lawmakers voted by 321 to 278 in favor of a motion that ruled out a potentially disorderly "no-deal" Brexit under any circumstances.

After two-and-a-half years of haggling since the 2016 Brexit referendum, Juncker cautioned this was Britain's last chance.

Lawmakers will vote on a government motion later which states that parliament rejects leaving the European Union without a deal on March 29, but notes that leaving without a deal remains the legal default unless a deal is agreed.

She said that the government would ask the European Union to delay Brexit if Parliament could agree on a withdrawal deal.

"The onus is now on everyone of us in this house to find out what that is".

Asked if the deal was sunk, Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said: "I wouldn't write the deal off just yet, I think there's many more twists and turns to come". Lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected it for a second time on Tuesday, furious about a contentious guarantee, known as the Irish backstop.

The so-called "backstop" solution for the Irish border - created to avert sectarian violence from returning to Britain's Northern Ireland - is opposed by more ardent Brexit supporters. They voted for the Article 50 Act, and the Withdrawal Act.

"To extend (divorce talks), why not. but the question is to extend in what conditions and for what to do", he added.

Mrs May told MPs "the options before us are the same as they always have been".

"While an extension of article 50 is now inevitable, responsibility for that extension now relies exclusively and squarely at the Prime Minister's door".

The EU noted that Wednesday's vote had no legal effect.

And there is the petard that will probably hoist the prime minister and her Brexit deal. "The EU is prepared for both".

Northern Ireland's 10 DUP MPs voted in favour of the amendment. May indicated as much at the House of Commons on Wednesday.

She also reiterated that she favored leaving the European Union "in an orderly fashion with a deal", and the withdrawal agreement, rejected on Tuesday, was "the best and indeed the only deal available".

"I appreciate their comments and advice, and hope that even those who must disagree with me and what I have voted for and why, as the months have gone on, at least understand my position". But the House of Commons doesn't seem ready to take that route either.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said a compromise solution should be found on options for a softer Brexit.

It is also likely to increase pressure on Mrs May, who faced calls from members of her own party to quit or call a general election to break the impasse.

As the clock ticks towards withdrawal day, business groups expressed dire warnings. Many fear Brexit will divide the West as it grapples with both the unconventional U.S. presidency of Donald Trump and growing assertiveness from Russian Federation and China, leaving Britain economically weaker and with its security capabilities depleted. "Politicians must use any extension to work together as a matter of urgency to secure a deal, locking in a legally binding transition within the necessary timeframe".
