Trump’s proposed $4.7 trillion budget is leading us towards another government shutdown

Trump’s proposed $4.7 trillion budget is leading us towards another government shutdown

In March of 2016, then-candidate Donald Trump told The Washington Post that he could eliminate the entire US debt in eight years. And it's been the case thus far through the Trump presidency.

The Republican president's $4.7 trillion budget was immediately panned by Democrats in Congress, who rejected his push past year for wall funding in a standoff that led to a five-week partial shutdown of the federal government.

That's the rosy forecast.

"I think, as he gets closer to 2020, he will need to lay out what a second term would look like", said Republican consultant Alex Conant.

"There is much to be concerned by in the Trump Administration's proposed budget, which is chock-full of short-sighted, draconian cuts to critical programs like medical research, education, environmental protection, transportation, and health care". Back when Trump still had that new president smell - and control of both Houses in Congress, ' tweeted Ben Corb, a spokesperson for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Members of Massachusetts' congressional delegation took issue this week with President Donald Trump's newly unveiled $4.7 trillion budget plan for 2020, arguing that its proposed border wall spending and cuts to domestic programs offer a "very clear picture of where (his) values lie". Rob Portman, R-Ohio. Last year, Congress boosted USA servicemembers' pay by 2.6 percent. The 5% hike in military spending is more than the Pentagon requested from the President. Instead, deficits have risen almost $500 billion since Barack Obama left office.

'The president's first budget slashed science budgets by 10-20%.

Trump's debt binge is occurring for two reasons.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said, based on the $130 billion savings, the administration would have to cut at least 1.7 million people from its rolls each year, beginning in 2021. "The Budget proposes a 2020 military pay raise of 3.1 percent - the largest increase in a decade", the document said.

The official said the budget "will have more reductions in spending than any president in history has ever proposed".

But Trump's own budget calculations show that reducing taxes and making heavy cuts to domestic programs doesn't balance the budget (at least not for 15 years and not without some big assumptions).

Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of MA noted that Trump promised to wipe out deficits in eight years as he ran for president in 2016. "How is that going to help the people in this room or most of the people you live with".

A senior administration official told reporters the budget would cut USA aid to foreign countries by $13 billion.

Democrats pounced on it, saying Trump broke his vow and that they would blast this in 2020 campaign ads. These are largely bipartisan ideas and are backed up somewhat by reporting by The Washington Post and other media outlets on Medicare scams.

"The impact on care for seniors would be devastating", said FAH President and CEO Chip Kahn. "This will be the first and last time we hear him push for these". "Medicare prescription drug negotiation is not one of them".

"I look forward to working with Congress to pass a budget that truly puts the needs of students, parents, teachers and local leaders first, because it is my honest belief that if we give them the freedom to break free from the one-size-fits-all 'school system, ' we will truly begin to unleash our nation's full potential".

Casting the president's plan as a "big wet kiss to the super-rich and giant corporations", the senator slammed language included in the budget proposal that she offered would: eliminate the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program that helps public servants with student debt; "wipe out" community block grants for cities and towns to use on public safety and other services; cut $53.4 billion from Medicaid and $220 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; and "gut" the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
