Eight killed in school shooting in Brazil, police say

Sao Paulo state Governor Joao Doria said four children and two members of staff were among the dead.

At least 17 other people, mostly children, were also shot and taken to hospital, police said in a written statement.

"The big question is: what was the motivation of these former students?" de Castro said.

Marcelo Salles, commander of police in São Paulo state, said that in over three decades of service, he had "never seen anything like this, it was an unspeakably brutal crime".

The assailants reportedly were former students of the school, yet the motive of the attack remains unclear.

According to the police official, Two armed and hooded men had attacked in the school and both of them were shot dead.

Kelly Milene Guerra Cardoso, 16, said she and other students took refuge in the school's cafeteria, locked the door and lay on the floor.

The attackers were trying to force their way inside a room at the back of the school where many students were hiding when police arrived.

"We stayed there until the door was opened".

Police say they found a revolver, a bow and arrow and items that appeared to be explosives inside.

"I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

Even though Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, it is rare to see school shootings in the South American country. Soon after being inaugurated January 1, Bolsonaro issued a decree making it easier for people wanting a gun to buy and possess one.
