Former astronaut Mark Kelly announces run for US Senate

That activism, the years they've spent campaigning for candidates who shared their beliefs on guns, and Kelly's experience in the Navy and at NASA mean he isn't a neophyte when it comes to government and politics.

Kelly is married to former Democratic Rep.

The 2020 election will decide who fills the last two years of McCain's term. The victor would have to run again for a full six-year term in 2022.

Kelly's name will appear on the Arizona special election ballot on November 3, 2020; other potential Democrats include current House of Representatives members Ruben Gallego and former Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton. The party is also gauging whether Arizona could be competitive at the presidential level in 2020, where Trump won in 2016.

But he has never run for anything before, and while astronauts are semi-famous in their own right, Kelly is still defined in the public's mind as "Gabby Giffords' husband".

Kelly, a former naval aviator, was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1996, in the same class as his twin brother Scott.

Kelly participated in four space shuttle missions, and before that, had served in the navy as a pilot, including in the Gulf War in 1990-91. Kelly and Giffords have since pushed Congress to enact gun control measures with little success. They shifted their focus to state legislatures in recent years, helping to strengthen background checks and domestic violence protections. Kelly, 54, who has been heavily recruited by Democrats, announced his intentions with a video in which he calls the campaign "my next mission".

"Turned out, you were the one that had the risky job".

He launched his campaign Tuesday with a moving video entitled "Full Speed Ahead".

"Now that the thesis that a Democrat can win statewide has been proven, we are going to see stronger challengers like Kelly and Gallego for statewide offices in the future", said Eberhart.

United States congressman Ruben Gallego of Phoenix is also considering a Senate run, which would likely set up a tough fight for the Democratic nomination.

Kelly said problems he wanted to take on include climate change, the rising cost of healthcare and increasing economic inequality.

A source close to Gallego told KTAR News in January that he was "very interested" in running for Senate, and the Democratic congressman tweeted Tuesday that he would make an announcement soon. McSally is a favorite of Senate leadership including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who had urged her appointment.

McCain died in August 2018.
