Three-time World Cup victor Pele said on social media: "I have great sadness in my heart today and I send condolences to the family he was so proud of".

"I had the privilege of becoming good friends with him over the years because we are from the same era and he was an opponent of mine on many occasions".

Former Stoke City goalkeeper Gordon Banks holds the Jules Rimet trophy as he is awarded a a Stoke City shirt before the game.

No cause of death was given.

Captain Bobby Moore, the baby of the team Alan Ball and Ray Wilson preceded him whilst several such as Nobby Stiles and Martin Peters suffer from Alzheimer's.

"He was incredible and we were lucky to have had him here at Leicester City Football Club". "He will be deeply missed".

His save from Brazilian legend Pele's downward header in the 1970 group clash has him enshrined as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. Pele was around the penalty spot when the guy crossed it from the wing, and I knew he was going to get up to it, because he could jump really high.

Banks, though, somehow threw himself across to stick out his massive right hand and push the ball over the crossbar. Then I looked back and I couldn't believe it hadn't gone in. "It was an impossible play".

As one of the finest goalkeepers in football history, Gordon will not only be remembered for his performances on the pitch but also as a champion and gentleman off the pitch.

Banks won 73 caps for England between 1963 and 1972 and made almost 200 appearances for Stoke before his playing career was brought to an end due to a auto crash that cost him the sight in one eye.

The star revealed in December 2015 that he was suffering from kidney cancer but continued to make personal appearances since his diagnosis. One of the very greatest.

"Banksie", as he was known, started his club career at Chesterfield before spells with Leicester (1959-67) and Stoke (1967-73) in the top division of English soccer.

The goalkeeper starred in England's 4-2 World Cup final victory over West Germany in 1966.
